Big Brother now watches over Akihabara

It is almost a year and a half after the Akihabara stabbing tragedy that left seven people dead, the Akihabara neighborhood association has installed and activated 16 outdoor surveillance cameras on Tuesday in an effort to bring back the reputation and trust of the district.

The Kanda Suehiro association inaugurated  the system at Shohei Elementary School. Some of the 16 cameras are installed on street lights around the school. The neighborhood association will monitor the video feeds from the installed cameras.

None of the first batch of cameras were deployed at the area where the stabbing incident occurred which is one of the main streets of Akihabara.

Other neighborhood associations are planning to install 34 more cameras by the end of March.
