Washimiya Town economy earned 1 Billion yen



The town of Washimiya of Saitama Prefecture has reported a 1 billion yen earnings into their local economy with the help of the anime Lucky Star. Sales of character related goods has reached 70 million yen. During the traditional three-day New Year's holidays, visitor numbers has increased from 90,000 in 2007 to 450,000 this year. According to the the town's commerce and industry associations, the town's website is the most popular website of any such association in the country with over 500 hits per day.

In August 2007, Newtype magazine featured Washimiya's main shrine, Washimoya Shrine, in an article on the various locales featured in the anime and manga Lucky Star, and provided directions on how to reach these places from the otaku mecca, Akihabara.
